UK reopens embassy in Tripoli

The UK is reopening its embassy in Tripoli after seven years of closing, announced British Ambassador to Libya Caroline Hurndall at a Tripoli- based party on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee on Sunday.

“I am delighted to announce this evening that the UK is today officially reopening our British Embassy here in Libya,” Hurndall said.

She noted, “Although the Embassy is based in Tripoli, this is a demonstration of our commitment to the whole of Libya. I am proud that our work touches the lives of Libyans across the whole country already.”

Hurndall confirmed in her speech that her country’s embassy is preparing educational and peacebuilding programs for Libyans across the country. She also noted the ongoing projects of mining and solar power led by English companies.

“The UK is playing a leading role in Libya by enhancing its existence in Libya economically, militarily and politically,” Kamel Abdullah, a Libyan political analyst at the Al- Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, told Jusoor Post. He added that the reopening of embassies in Libya is a good indicator for the security situation in the country.

Libya witnessed a diplomatic breakthrough since Prime Minister Abdul Hamid al-Dabaiba took the lead in 2021, when many countries reopened their embassies, including Egypt, Germany, France and Malta. Many other embassies are expected to open soon, such as Russia and Switzerland.
